Stressed? Take a Forest Bath.

Immersing yourself in warm bath can be not only a great sensory experience but helps to relieve stress as well. Another great decompressor is based on a Japanese practice shinrin-yoku, which translates to “forest bathing” or “absorbing the forest atmosphere.” You can immerse yourself in the sensory experience of the forest or other natural environment as a form of “eco-therapy”.

The concept is simple. Spend time in nature. Slow down and immerse yourself in the aromas, textures, sights of the outdoors.

Benefits include:

  • lower blood pressure

  • lower heart rate

  • lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone

  • boosted mood

  • boosted immunity

How to Forest Bathe:*

You don’t have to go hiking deep in the forest! Go to a park, a local trail, a beach, any natural setting. Unplug from the outside world and connect to the present moment.

  • Use your senses to ground yourself in your environment.

  • Use a beginner’s mind to take in your surroundings. If you do go for a walk, try to resist focusing on a destination. Be mindfully present in the experience vs the outcome.

*As always use appropriate outdoor safety: sunscreen, stay on marked trails, use appropriate footwear etc.
